August 11 is when the OPPO N1 mini will launch in India

OPPO had been teasing the N1 mini via their social feeds through the past week or so. The N1 mini, as the name suggests, is the mini version of the OPPO N1 that happens to be the Chinese phone maker's first phone in India, launched back in January. OPPO hasn't revealed the N1 mini specs set for India, but we assume it won't be very different from the version OPPO unveiled earlier. Here is what the N1 mini is believed to be having under the hood. Specifications 5-inch 1280 x 720p display 1.6GHz Snapdragon 400 SoC 2GB RAM 16GB on-board ROM 13 mega-pixel swivel camera 2140mAh battery Android v4.3 It's quite clear that the N1 mini will be a camera-centric device with the above mentioned specifications. It is worthy to note that the 1.6GHz Snapdragon 400 SoC that the N1 mini is expected to feature powers the (expectedly) much cheaper Xiaomi Redmi 1S as well.

Here is when you can expect the Xiaomi Redmi 1S, Redmi Note, Mi 4 and Mi Pad to launch in India

Xiaomi drew a lot of flak for not meeting the demand that their first India launch, the Mi 3 saw. Along with the Mi 3, Xiaomi announced a couple of other devices including the cost-effective Redmi 1S and the octa-core monster, the Redmi Note. Considering the demand that the Mi 3 saw, it is but natural for one to feel that it's going to be quite a bit more for the cheaper Redmi phones. Xiaomi did say that the phones would be made available sometime in August, but didn't specify a date. However, Xiaomi's Hugo Barra took to BGR India's comments to delve details. According to Hugo's article, the Xiaomi Mi 4 and the Mi Pad will be available in India by the 'end of the year'. "Launch will be in a few weeks, am hoping to announce an official date at the end of next week (still finalizing some logistics details)", is what Barra said about the Redmi 1S, which I think is going to be the one to watch out for. About the Redmi Note, Barra added that it'll be launched before the Diwali season, which happens to be a favourite shopping time for Indians. Lastly, Barra also mentioned that Xiaomi is ...

HP teams up with designer Michael Bastian and Gilt for its luxury smartwatch

HP has released first images of its upcoming luxury smartwatch thereby announcing its foray into the competitive smartwatch market. The company has partnered with retailer Gilt and US designer Michael Bastian for its premium smartwatch that will be compatible with iOS and Android devices via an app. According to the image, the HP luxury smartwatch sports a round dial similar to the elegant looking Motorola'a Moto 360. It will sport a 44mm stainless steel casing and three hardware button controls. The design is said to draw inspiration from the luxurious interiors found in high-end automobiles. Designed by popular US based designer Michael Bastian, the smartwatch will be sold through online retailer Gilt this year. The HP smartwatch will include notifications for email, text and calls.  Moreover, the app will offer music controls and display weather forecasts. It will be "water resistant" and have a battery life of up to seven days. The smartwatch will also get support for interchangeable straps in nylon olive green, brown leather, black rubber, and a limited edition black strap. HP will design the software for the watch which means it will not run on Google's Android Wear OS. There is no word on the pricing of the HP smartwatch but is clearly targeted towards luxury market. via:Slashgear

Microsoft files patent lawsuit against Samsung over Android royalties

Microsoft has sued Samsung in U.S. District Court, over patent licencing deal. The company claims that the South Korean giant has stopped making royalty payments on time last fall and is refusing to pay interest for the delay. "After becoming the leading player in the worldwide smartphone market, Samsung decided late last year to stop complying with its agreement with Microsoft" said Microsoft's David Howard, Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel in a blog post. Under a 2011 deal, Samsung pays Microsoft an undisclosed amount of royalty for each Android phone and tablet it sells. Microsoft claimed that Samsung is using Microsoft's April acquisition of Nokia's phone business as an excuse to stop complying with the contract. The software giant also claimed that Samsung is not willing to make the payments as it has become a leading player in smartphone market with high sale numbers. In a statement, Samsung said, "We will review the complaint in detail and determine appropriate measures in response". The lawsuit does not mention the exact amount Samsung owes to Microsoft. Patent disputes have become an inseparable part of the smartphone ecosystem. Apple and Samsung lawsuit is one of the most high profile smartphone patent cases.

China's Rikomagic announced it's MK902 II TV box some time back, but it's yet to see light of day with expectant buyers queuing up. However, from what we're hearing, this is all set to change. Along with the powerful CPU/GPU combo will be 2GB of RAM, 8GB/16GB of storage (expandable via microSD) and an interesting inclusion in a 5 mega-pixel camera. Pricing for the MK902 II will hover around the $100 mark for wholesale buyers. On the other hand, one-off purchasers will might have to pay up to $130 apiece plus shipping, when buying from re-sellers. Would you still go for an Android TV box over say, Google's Chrome OS or the upcoming Android TV? Let us know in the comments section below.

Cell Phone Unlocking now legal in the US, President Obama signs bill

The US President Barack Obama has signed the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act into law. This essentially means that it is now legal to unlock a cell phone in the United States. Previously, unlocking your phone was considered as a violation of federal copyright law, although it was rarely enforced. The US made carrier unlocking illegal in January 2013. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act is currently the reason that unlocking cell phones is illegal. Technically, unlocking your phone to use on other carriers without permission constitutes "circumventing technological measures" that protect software copyrights. However, every three years, the Library of Congress can make specific exemptions to this law. In other words, they can decide that it's legal to unlock your smartphone, even if the original law said it's not. Cell phone unlocking is particularly beneficial for customers who are frequent travelers and  wish to take their cell phones with them to another carrier to other countries and prefer to use the services of a local network instead of paying a premium for roaming charges. Though the law makes unlocking legal, it does not direct wireless carriers to provide unlock codes without a valid reason. Consumers who are still under a previously-signed service contract with their ...

LG G Watch software update to fix hardware corrosion issues

LG's G Watch is amongst the first Android Wear running devices out there and has achieved moderate success amongst the enthusiast circles. With early adoption comes a bit of a risk though and this was witnessed by an increasing number of users in the form of corrosion buildup on the POGO pins located at the back of the watch. LG is now pushing out a software update to fix this hardware issue.  OTA update build number KMV78Y is now heading out to users and is supposed to fix the corrosion build up spotted on the exposed charging POGO pins placed at the rear of the watch. While LG did not officially comment on the update, a support representatives comment can be seen below. LG TV, Monitors, AV and IT Support Recently it has come to our attention that a small number of G Watch devices have been reported to have developed discoloration and residue buildup on the terminal pins located on the back. While completely safe and unlikely to affect charging, LG will be rolling out a maintenance release over the next few days that will disable the current when the G Watch is not in the charging dock. The maintenance release will ...

Vine updates Android app with improved video recording quality and notifications

Vine has improved the video recording quality on its Android mobile app in the latest update. Prior to this update, video recording quality on the app was quiet poor. Unfortunately, the popular video sharing service from Twitter has not announced how the video quality has improved exactly. Meaning it is not clear if the resolution, post processing or any other feature has received an update. In addition, the app now gets an enhanced notification option. The Settings menu now has more options to display, such as Likes, Comments, Re-vines, Mentions, Follows and more. Last month Vine was updated with Loop Counts that lets user know how many times their 6 second video has been viewed. Prior to this both the Android and iOS app also received support for Direct messaging in April. It is not known whether the latest update will land on iOS as well. via: Android Police
